DESC: Scott Chaskey writes about Quail Hill, the community farm in north Amagansett (on Long Island) where he has lived since 1989. Quail Hill is a CSA (community supported agriculture project) where members can buy shares and, during the course of the gardening year, are supplied twice a week with organically grown herbs, flowers, and produce of various kinds in exchange for some labor on the land. Chaskey eloquently describes the satisfactions of this kind of farming: the exquisitely fresh vegetables, the heirloom varieties he has revived, and the beauty of the place. He also makes a strong case for rotating crops, using compost, and relying on experience rather than conventional wisdom.
